Clinical Efficacy of Phase Leukocyte Reduction Filters in High-risk Patients (4)
It has been proposed that contaminating leukocytes are responsible for transfusion-induced rejection; however, leukocyte reduction filters did not prevent rejection in the current studies. Moreover, we generated a novel transgenic mouse with specific expression of a model and demonstrated that transfusion of induced a response. Together, these data suggest that themselves are capable of inducing rejection. Cellular immunization is neither monitored nor managed by current transfusion medicine practice; however, the current data suggest that on represent an unappreciated and significant consequence of transfusion.
